Two banner designs featuring new 土著 艺术 now float overhead on light posts in the he艺术 of campus as a visual sign of greeting to this place. 其中一幅画上是一个放下手臂的人物, designed by the 艺术ist as a marker for welcoming visitors 而且 guests to this l而且 of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples upon whose traditional territory the university st而且s, 溅起的灰蓝色唤起了天空和海岸的波浪. The other is filled with e艺术h tones of cedar 而且 s而且 inviting reflections of l而且 而且 connection, 宴会结束后,第二个身影举起双臂表示感谢和欢迎.

1.2-kilometre campus greenway—including the main pathway near First Peoples House—will be accompanied at night by designs from two spindle whorls,
我真的想要一个欢迎的姿态, 对新来的同学来说, 维多利亚或加拿大, 对于这里的游客和客人, to feel a welcoming that’s compassion for learning about the culture 而且 to get to know the l而且s that you are on.

The event is an important opportunity for the 维多利亚大学 community to come together to acknowledge the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, 并从知识中体验和学习, 当地土著社区的教学和实践. All students, staff 而且 faculty—both 土著 而且 non-土著—are welcome to attend.
Spindle whorls are typically used by 海岸赛利希语 female 而且 Two-Spirit weavers to spin animal hair into wool for textiles. August’s two whorls will be projected by light as stencils on the ground 而且 will be operational very soon. The 艺术ist’s work will be lit up all along the greenway from Gordon Head Road to Ring Road, 包括主要入口, crosswalks 而且 in all five of the spaces around 维多利亚大学’s new student housing 而且 dining buildings.

在对称的老鹰设计中以飞行的力量旋转, one of the spindle whorl designs symbolizes a message of encouragement for people to emerge from their comfort zones 而且 rise above challenges, 8月解释道, 谁把它命名为“更上一层楼?.”
另一种设计, 叫做《撒利希医学,” is also contemporary but August hopes it additionally captures a sense of the “trance-like” experience that is p艺术 of the traditional use of these sacred heirlooms when the weaver is spinning the wool.
"我知道这就是我的人生目标"
在海岸萨利希传统中, intricately carved house posts st而且 at the entrance to traditional longhouses to welcome people into the surroundings. August was mentoring with a 海岸赛利希语 艺术ist “who’s inclined to fall into the history 而且 reviving of 海岸赛利希语 house posts. 作为他的学生,我开始了回顾历史的实践, such as of the works of Master Carver 而且 Ts艺术lip First Nation 艺术ist Charles Elliott in the 1980s. 从那时到现在,我想在实践中继续这种复兴.”
八月出生在“传统的unceded lək̓ʷəŋən和 WSÁNEĆ领土现在被称为维多利亚,” 而且 recalls their first 艺术 supplies being their uncle’s old paintbrushes: “I can picture myself painting at two years old.
在导师的指导下,他创作了多种媒介的艺术,如丝网版画/吉克力版画, glass 而且 cedar s而且blasted pieces; they are currently further mentoring with Qwul'thilum in wood carving.
“我的诠释非常现代, 查看工件,奥古斯特说, ,并牢记传统知识.
“The people who’ve come along on my path included a person I know in the 艺术s community who asked me, 是什么让你与众不同? 这真的让我思考. And I realized I use my spiritual encounters with animals 而且 nature to illustrate what I want to convey through 艺术. 这药我吃了. 我想和大家分享.”

校园绿道项目
整个绿道贯穿维多利亚大学校园的中心, 当完成, 对行人和骑自行车的人来说,会是一条繁忙而美丽的路线吗. 它将包括生态特征, 公共表, 树的树冠, 长凳和其他观景平台, 以及诠释艺术和标志,以突出土著历史, 语言和与土地的联系.
铺路石也会被布置成雪松编织的设计图案.
A guiding principle of the greenway project is to reflect 土著 ways of knowing 而且 being within the l而且scape. I know I speak for others involved in coordinating the project in saying how delighted I am to see Margaret’s 艺术work now being raised across campus 而且 their contributions toward creating a welcoming 而且 inclusive campus environment.

Legacy Galleries is delighted to forge connections between campus 而且 土著 艺术ists with this project. 这是一个将艺术品从画廊墙外搬到土地上的机会, to celebrate 而且 foreground 海岸赛利希语 艺术ists 而且 communicate our commitment to 和解.
